Scales are groups of notes ordered by pitch or frequency, either going up in pitch or down. To learn guitar scales is a great way of exploring the fretboard of the guitar and finding the patterns that will help you with improvising solos and also it will increase the flexibility and strength of your fingers the more exercises you do.

Examples of heptatonic scales are the major scale and the minor scale. Unlike major and minor scales, the pentatonic has no semitones. The word “pentatonic” comes from the Greek word pente which means five and tonic which means tone. This scale is often referred to as a five-tone scale or a five-note scale. The pentatonic scale can function as both major and minor on the guitar. You can start with E minor pentatonic, but the same notes and patterns can also produce G major pentatonic. To understand how this works, look at this example. Notice how both an E minor (Em) chord and a G major chord fit [ ].

The first scale you learn is the A minor pentatonic. A minor pentatonic can be used as a lead scale over chord progressions in A minor, C major, and A blues (“blues” can imply a specific, six-note scale, as well as a chord progression). It also works pretty well over A major and C blues. Not bad for a scale that’s two notes shy of a major.   My Scale Recommendation. I currently use the OXO Food Scale with Pull-Out Display, which has a pound capacity. It measures in ounces and grams, as well as milliliters and cups. I previously used the Escali Pana Volume Measuring Scale for years; this is a great scale if you’re new to weighing ingredients. It comes with a chart of.

However, using the common right hand fingering of can cause future confusion when you eventually change to the fingering to facilitate an octave scale.

So, instead of using a 5-finger scale, teach your students to play the right-hand pentascale by “tucking the thumb”.

This means they end the ascending pentascale on. That’s why that book of scales is so thick. Those books present each main scale type starting with each of the twelve tones. So just for the four scale types we mentioned before (major, minor, major pentatonic, minor pentatonic and blues), that’s 60 different scales.

The 7 scales on the chart below are a good place to start. These scales are essential for beginning jazz guitarists and enable you to play over almost any jazz standard. Playing scales on one string is a great way to simplify the often mystifying world of scales. But as you might have guessed, it’s rare that we actually play scales on one string, when using them in actual musical situations (like improvising or writing a song). Instead, we play scales in fixed positions.

List of Musical Scales. Here is a complete list of the major, minor harmonic and minor melodic scales, in treble and bass clefs. If you need the natural minor scale - use the descending part of the melodic minor scale - it is the same!. If you need to work out how scales are constructed with patterns of tones (whole notes) and semitones (half notes), take a look at our "How to write Scales" page.

Instead, play Classical music pieces (especially Bach) which have within them all the scale-like passages you'll ever need - with the added benefit of learning some great works of music JF But if you really must - try "The Complete Book of Scales, Chords, Arpeggios & Cadences" from Alfred Publishing Co.

- this includes all the Major, Minor. When a teacher presented me a book showing the diagrams for all guitar scales, or rather, the most common guitar scales, I was like “Holy crap, do I need to memorize all this to become a good guitar player”.

Not to mention that there were all the guitar chords that needed to be learned, as well as the techniques, reading standard music notation, rhythms and a whole lot of other things. Case.

Mindfulness is defined as “the act of noticing new things, a process that promotes flexible responding to the demands of the environment” (Pagnini et al.,p. 91). Titles of books. One of the best resources for learning scales is the book by the Hal Leonard Corporation, Scales and Finger Exercises – Upper Elementary to Lower Intermediate Piano, available for purchase at It will provide scale exercises for each hand separately and both hands together, as well as fingering tips.

Move On To The Next Major Scale. Instead of playing every scale in eighth notes or emphasizing the downbeat of every measure, try using odd note groupings and accenting different parts of the measure to imply different meters. For example, take the same F Major scale in ascending thirds.

That will keep your root note of the minor pentatonic scale the same as the major pentatonic scale. But there’s a simpler way start with a major pentatonic scale (notes: 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6) and keep the same notes.

But instead of starting on the 1, shift the scale. MORE SCALES There are plenty more scales to use over a minor key. If you already familiar with the minor pentatonic and the natural minor scale and you want to step up, check out the dorian scale, harmonic minor scale and the melodic minor scale.

They set the stage for beautiful exceptional colors and mysterious atmospheres over a minor key.
